Introduction

People's daily activities will never be separated from art products, this is because art itself is part of human life. Even though you are not an artist, as a human being you are a connoisseur of art whenever and wherever you are

Aktifitas orang sehari-hari tidak akan pernah lepas dari produk seni , ini dikarenakan seni itu sendiri adalah bagian dari kehidupan manusia. Meskipun kamu bukanlah seorang seniman, sebagai manusia kamu adalah seorang penggemar seni kapanpun dan dimanapun kamu berada.


Art is part of culture, preserving art means preserving culture, and preserving culture is the same as maintaining the existence of a nation. Because art, especially culture is too broad, our focus in this presentation is on the impact of preserving traditional arts on preserving nation culture.

Kesenian merupakan bagian daripada budaya, melestarikan kesenian berarti melestarikan budaya, dan melestarikan budaya sama saja menjaga keberadaan suatu bangsa Sebab kesenian, terutama bidang budaya terlalu luas, fokus kami dalam persentasi ini adalah pada dampak pelestarian kesenian tradisonal atas pelestarian budaya bangsa.


Why did I choose traditional art? Because this art is in danger of becoming extinct, even though traditional art is the hallmark of a nation, preserving traditional art is tantamount to preserving the existence of a nation's culture and preserving culture is tantamount to preserving the existence of a nation.

Mengapa saya memilih kesenian tradisional ? Sebab kesenian ini dalam bahaya dari menuju kepunahan, meskipun kesenian tradisional merupakan ciri khas suatu bangsa, melestarikan kesenian tradisonal sama dengan melestarikan keberadaan budaya suatu bangsa dan melestarikan budaya sama dengan melestarikan keberadaan suatu bangsa.

            One way to preserve culture is to preserve traditional arts. There are a variety of traditional arts, ranging from music, weddings, folklore, paintings, sculptures, and so on.

              Salah satu jalan untuk melestarikan budaya ialah melestarikan seni tradisonal. Ada beragam seni tradisional, mulai dari musik, pernikahan, cerita rakyat, lukisan, patung, dan seterusnya.

Saya perlu mengingatkan anda bahwa seni dihubungkan dengan keindahan, Ilmu pengetahuan dihubungkan dengan kebenaran, agama dan adab dihubungkan dengan kebaikan. Inilah yang didalam pembahasan selanjutnya kami fokusnya pada sesautu yang dihubungkan dengan keindahan semata.



The Challenge of Preserving Traditional Art in the Modern Era 

(Tantangan Pelestarian Seni Tradisional di Jaman Modern)

As I explained earlier, traditional art is threatened with extinction because it is replaced by modern art or I prefer to call it pop culture.

Sebagaiman telah saya jelaskan di awal, kesenian tradisonal terancam dengan kepunahan, sebab ia digantikan oleh kesenian modern atau saya lebih suka menyebutnya budaya Pop.


In today's modern era, preserving traditional art is not easy, the younger generation as the successors of a nation think that traditional art is old-fashioned and does not suit their lifestyle, in contrast to modern pop art which they tend to be interested in.

Di jaman modern saat ini, pelestarian kesenian tradisonal tidaklah mudah, generasi muda sebagai penerus suatu bangsa berpikir bahwa kesenian tradisional merupakan hal yang kuno dan tidaklah cocok dengan gaya hidup mereka. Sebaliknya terhadap kesenian Pop Modern dimana mereka cenderung menjadi tertarik didalamnya.


The thing that makes them think traditional art is old-fashioned because part of the younger generation wants to change and traditional art is considered a part that they must change or replace, and their lifestyle which tends to be simple and flexible makes traditional art which has many rigid rules unsuitable for them or their lifestyle.

Hal yang membuat mereka berpikir kesenian tradisonal itu kuno sebab sebagian generasi muda ingin perubahan dan kesenian tradisional dianggap bagian daripada yang mereka harus ubah atau ganti, dan gaya hidup mereka cenderung untuk sederhana dan fleksibel membuat kesenian tradisonal yang mana memiliki banyak aturan kaku tidak cocok bagi mereka atau gaya hidup mereka.


However, preserving traditional arts means preserving the culture of a nation, and preserving the culture of a nation means preserving the existence of the nation itself. This is what the younger generation in many countries in the world does not realize.

Bagaimanapun juga, melestarikan kesenian tradisonal berarti melestarikan budaya suatu bangsa, dan melestarikan budaya suatu bangsa berarti melestarikan keberadaan bangsa itu sendiri. Inilah yang generasi muda di kebanyakan negara di dunia tidak menyadarinya.


Raise the awareness of the younger generation toward traditional art

To arouse the interest of the younger generation in traditional art, it is necessary to build awareness for the younger generation to learn and apply it in their daily lives.

Untuk membangkitkan minat generasi muda pada kesenian tradisonal, diperlukan untuk membangun kepedualian generasi muda untuk belajar dan menerapkannya dalam kehidupan mereka sehari-hari.


How do you raise the awareness of the younger generation to be aware of and care about their own culture? One of which is by arousing pride in their own national culture. So how do you generate this pride? One of them is by combining it with the pop culture they are interested in so that the younger generation considers traditional arts not old-fashioned and not in accordance with their pop culture but can also adapt to current conditions.

Bagaimana anda membangkitkan kepedulian generasi muda menjadi peduli dan perhatian dengan budaya mereka ? Salah satunya dengan membangkitkan kebanggan pada budaya nasional mereka. Jadi bagaiman anda menciptakan kebanggaan ini ?. Salah satunya dengan menggabungkannya dengan budaya Pop yang mana mereka tertarik didalamnya sehingga generasi muda tidak menganggap kesenian tradisional kuno dan tidak sesuai dengan budaya Pop mereka tapi juga dapat menyesuaikan dengan kondisi terkini.


Why do I tend to choose to combine pop culture and traditional arts, rather than making them stand alone?, That's because I see in many places it is difficult for traditional art to survive if they don't join with modern art or pop culture. The examples that I think is good to emulate is:

Mengapa saya cenderung memilih menggabungkan budaya pop dan kesenian tradisional, dibandingkan membuatnya berdiri sendiri-sendiri ?. Itu dikarenakan saya melihat dibanyak tempat sangatlah sulit bagi kesenian tradisonal untuk bertahan jika mereka tidak bergabung dengan kesenian modern atau budaya pop. Contoh yang saya pikir bagus untuk ditiru adalah :


  • Traditional music is used in music concerts, but the song lyrics are replaced by modern living conditions (Musik Tradisional digunakan dalam konser musik, tetapi lirik lagunya diganti dengan kondisi kehidupan modern).

  • Incorporating traditional music into film soundtracks, as was done in the film Fast and Furious 8 with Javanese gamelan music, Indonesia.

  • (Memadukan musik tradisional kedalam soundtrack film , sebagaimana yang telah dilakukan dalam film Fast And Furious ke-8 dengan musik gamalean Jawa, Indonesia).

  • Making modern buildings with traditional architecture or renovating traditional buildings can also raise the spirit of pride in the younger generation for their national culture, and in many countries, there are many traditional building icons in the middle of modern cities.

  • (Membuat bangunan modern dengan arsitektur tradisonal atau merenovasi bangunan tradisoanl juga dapat meningkatkan semangat kebanggaan pada generasi muda atas budaya nasionalnya, dan dibanyak negara, ada banyak ikon bangunan tradisional ditengah-tengah kota modern).

  • Inclusion of traditional arts into pop culture events so that traditional artists still have room to exist.

  • (Memasukkan kesenian tradisonal kedalam kegiatan budaya pop sehingga seniman tradsional masih memiliki ruang untuk tetap ada).

  • Preserving a traditional wedding ceremony.

  • (Pelestarian pesta pernikahan tradisional).

  • Requiring to wear traditional clothes on certain days, for example in Indonesia on certain days it is mandatory to use batik, a traditional Indonesian cloth so that batik artists can continue to exist and also introduce types and motifs of batik to the younger generation.

  • (Mewajibkan menggunakan pakaian tradisional pada hari tertentu, sebagai contoh Indonesia pada hari tertentu mewajibkan memakai batik, pakaian tradisional Indonesia sehingga seniman Batik dapat terus berlanjut dan sekaligus mengenalkan jenis dan motif batik pada generasi muda.)


As well as many other efforts to preserve traditional arts in the context of preserving the culture of a nation.

            Serta banyak usaha -usaha lainnya untuk melestarikan kesenian tradisional dalam kerangka pelestarian budaya suatu bangsa.


Pop culture Vs traditional art

(Budaya Pop Vs Kesenian Tradisonal)


Many have asked me, can pop culture and traditional arts go hand in hand without bringing each other down? In theory, it can, but in practice, it's difficult to do. However, as a "cultural product", pop culture and traditional arts need a "market", and the biggest "market" is the younger generation based on the population.

Banyak yang bertanya kepadaku, Bisakah budaya pop dan kesenian tradisonal bergandengan tangan tanpa saling meniadakan ? Dalam teorinya bisa, tapi prakteknya itu sulit. Bagaimana pun juga sebagai "Produk Budaya", budaya pop dan kesenian tradisonal perlu sebuah pangsa pasar, dan pangsa pasar terbesar ialah generasi muda berdasarkan jumlah populasi.


Using the term economics, there is market competition between pop culture products and traditional arts. Because of this competition, modern art, or I prefer to call it pop culture and traditional art, will tear each other down, even though both of them already have their own permanent fans.

            Memakai istilah ilmu ekonomi, Ada persaingan pasara anatara produk budaya pop dan kesenian tradisional. Sebab persaingan ini, kesenian modern atau saya lebih suka menyebutnya itu sebagai budaya pop dan kesenian tradisional, akan saling mencabik satu dengan lainnya, Meskipun keduanya sudah punya penggemar tetapnya.
            

Should pop culture be limited?
(Apakah Sebaiknya Budaya Pop Dibatasi ?)

If you ask me who supports freedom of expression, the answer is of course no, limiting pop culture is tantamount to killing youth's creativity, besides that pop culture also provides foreign exchange and jobs for residents. Pop culture for me is another term for modern art.

But I also realize that the development of pop culture can kill traditional art which in the end can eliminate the existence of a nation's culture.

Jika anda bertanya kepadaku yang mendukung kebebasan berekspresi, jawabannya tentulah tidak, Pembatasan budaya pop sama halnya membunuh kreativitas anak muda, disamping itu budaya pop juga memberikan devisa negara dan pekerjaan bagi penduduk. Budaya pop bagiku merupakan hal lain dari kesenian modern.


So that traditional art continues to exist and pop culture continues to develop, then in my opinion what should be done is to attract public interest especially the younger generation, to traditional arts not by prohibiting freedom of expression by prohibiting pop culture from developing and one of the ways that I propose is to make a combination between pop culture and traditional art as I explained earlier.

            Jadi kesenian tradisonal terus berlanjut untuk bertahan dan budaya pop terus berlanjut untuk bekrkembang, dan didalam pendapatku mengenai apa sebaiknya yang akan dilakukan untuk menarik minat publik, terutama generasi muda terhadap kesenian tradisional tidak dengan melarang kebebasan berekspresi dengan melarang budaya pop berkembang dan salah satu caranya yang saya usulkan ialah dengan menggabungkan antara budaya pop dan kesenian tradisional sebagaimana saya telah jelaskan diawal.


The Need for an Arts College

(Perlunya Sebuah Kampus Seni)


However, are all the efforts above sufficient to raise awareness of the younger generation regarding the preservation of traditional arts and culture of their own nation? The answer is of course no, the things mentioned above are temporary, usually once the season is over then they have forgotten again. To create continuous awareness, it is necessary to carry out systematic efforts from an institution, especially art educational institutions, especially art campuses.

Bgaimanapun juga, apakah semua usaha diatas sudah cukup meningkatkan kepedulian bagi generasi muda akan pelesetarian kesenian tradisional dan budaya bangsa mereka ? Jawabannya tentulah tidak, Hal-hal yang dimaksudakan diatas bersifat sementara, biasanya ketika satu musim sudah usai, kemudian terlupakan kembali. Diperlukan untuk menjalankan usaha sistematis dari sebuah lembaga, terutama lembaga pendidikan seni, khususnya kampus seni.


Why do you have to go through an arts campus? That's because an arts campus is an institution that have the resources and legality to make young people aware of the preservation of traditional arts for the sake of preserving the culture of their own nation.

Mengapa anda harus memulainya mellaui sebuah kampus seni ?, Itu karena sebuah kampus seni adalah lembaga yang memiliki sumber daya dan keabsahan hukum untuk membuat anak muda peduli tentang pelestarian kesenian tradisional demi melestarikan budaya nasional mereka.


Art education institutions, especially art colleges, need to teach traditional arts to their students as well as how to combine the nation's traditional arts and modern pop culture. Art campuses are expected to have a curriculum that is in line with the times, as well as to research the history and development of traditional arts.

Lembaga pendidikan seni, terutama kampus seni perlu mengajarkan kesenian tradisional kepada mahasiswanya seperti bagaimana cara memadukan kesenian tradisional bangsa dan budaya pop modern. Kampus seni diharapkan memiliki kurikulum yang sejalan dengan jaman, seperti penelitian sejarah dan perkembangan kesenian tradisional.


Art education campuses will produce artists with quality human resources. It is hoped that the alumni of the art campus will become a locomotive for the awareness of the younger generation in preserving the arts and culture of their own nation.

Kampus seni akan menghasilkan seniman dengan SDM berkualitas. Diharapkan para alumni kampus seni akan menjadi lokomotif bagi kepedulian generasi muda dalam melestarikan kesenian dan budaya bangsanya.


Apart from art campuses, other art educational institutions cannot be ignored, for example, course institutions, art galleries, and art museums, as supporters of traditional arts activities, and of course all of them must work together to preserve traditional arts.

Terpisah dari kampus seni, lembaga pendidikan seni lainnya tidak bisa diabaikan,contohnya, lembaga kursus, galeri seni, dan museum seni sebagai pendukung aktifitas kesenian tradisional, dan tentunya semua lembaga tersebut harus bekerjasama untuk melestarikan kesenian tradisional.



Government regulations in regulating traditional arts

(Kebijakan Pemerintah Dalam Mengatur Kesenian Tradisional)


It is very necessary for me that the government of a country regulates the lives of its citizens so that they have an awareness of their nation's culture, especially in preserving their nation's traditional arts. However, I also do not agree that government regulations limit the freedom of expression of its citizens.

Sangat diperlukan bagiku bahwa pemerintahan suatu negara mengatur kehidupan warganya sehingga mereka memiliki kepedulian budaya bangsanya, terutama melestarikan kesenian tardisional bangsanya. Bagimanapun juga saya tidak setuju kebijakan pemerintah membatasi kebebasan berekspresi.

            

            In order not to curb freedom of expression for its citizens, the government of a country needs to limit itself to things that are purely physical in nature, not to the content of the artistic expression itself. Examples of these regulations are:

                Dalam hal tidak mengekang kebebasan berekspresi warganya, pemerintah suatu negara perlu membatasi dirinya sendiri tehadap hal-hal yang murni bersifat fisik bukan isi dari ekspresi seni itu sendiri. Contoh kebijakan tersebut ialah :


  • The government makes regulations on efforts to preserve ancient buildings and heritage objects.

  • (Pemerintah membuat aturan atas usaha melestarikan gedung-gedung tua dan benda pusaka)

  • The government also organizes events featuring traditional performances, such as traditional parties, traditional music concerts, and exhibitions of paintings, sculptures, and others.

  • (Pemerintah juga mengatur acara yang menampilkan pertunjukan kesenian tradisional, seperti pesta ada, konser musik tradisional, pameran lukisan, patung, dan lain-lain).

  • The government also needs to build infrastructure facilities for art activists, for example creating art buildings and art exhibition venues.

  • (Pemerintah juga perlu membangun fasilitas infrastruktur untuk aktifitas berkesenian, contohnya membuat gedung berkesenian dan tempat pertunjukan seni).

  • As a regulator, the government has also made regulations that make it easier for artists to carry out artistic activities and facilitate entry permits for tourists. Regarding the relationship between tourist permits and art activists, I will discuss this in another discussion.

  • (Sebagai pemangku kebijakan, pemerintah juga harus membuat kebijakan yang menjadikan lebih mudah bagi seniman untuk menjalankan aktifitas seni dan memfasilitasi ijin masuk bagi wisatawan. Mengenai hubungan antara ijin wisatawan dan aktifitas seni, saya akan membahasanya pada pembahasan yang lain).


There are many other creative ways in terms of the efforts of the government in a country to preserve the traditional art of its own nation, but by not curbing the freedom of expression for its citizens. In my opinion, all these creative ways refer to physical development and ease of licensing, not to regulation of the content of the material art itself.

Ada banyak cara kreatif lainnya dalam hal usaha pemerintah di suatu negara melestarikan kesenian tradisional milik bangsanya sendiri, tapi dengan tidak mengekang kebebsan berekspresi warganya. Dalam pandanganku, Semua cara kreratif merujuk pada pembanguna fisik dan kemudahan perijinan, bukan mengatur isi daripada materi seni itu sendiri.


I myself realize that in various countries, in order not to cause conflict among its citizens, it is necessary for the government in that country to regulate artistic content within certain limits. So I'm not suggesting absolute freedom for art.

Diriku menyadari di berbagai negara, dalam rangka tidak menyebabkan konflik diantara sesama warganya, diperlukan bagi pemerintah di negara tersebut untuk mengatur isi seni dengan batasan tertentu. Saya tidak menyarankan kekbebasan mutlak berkesenian.


Private sector involvement in the preservation of traditional art

(Keterlibatan Pihak Swasta Dalam Pelestarian Kesenian Tradisional).


Preservation of traditional arts requires a large budget, government funds, and private funds of traditional arts activists, not enough to fund arts preservation.

Pelestarian kesenian tradisional memerlukan anggaran besar, dana pemerintah dan dana pihak swasta untuk aktifitas seni tidaklah cukup untuk mendanai pelestarian seni.


The involvement of the private sector is needed in the preservation of the arts, but for me, this involvement is not merely a charity activity, because if it is only a charity activity, it is still not sufficient, it is needed to be more mutually beneficial for all parties.

Keterlibatan pihak swasta diperlukan dalam pelestarian seni, tapi bagiku, keterlibatan ini tidak sekedar kegiatan amal, sebab jika hanya kegiatan amal, tidaklah cukup, diperlukan lebih saling menguntungkan bagi semua pihak.



For the private sector, profit is the main factor for them to provide large funds for the preservation of the arts. For example in Bali, Indonesia, the private sector sponsors traditional art events held by art activists, so that with these art activities they bring visitors/tourists to the hotels or malls or tourist attractions that they own and that of course brings profit for them and traditional art activists. get orders/jobs from the private sector.

Untuk pihak swasta, laba merupakan faktor utama untuk memberikan pendanaan besar bagi pelestarian seni. Contohnya Bali, Indonesia, pihak swasta mensponsori acara kesenian tradisional yang diadakan oleh para seniman, sehinga dengan adanya kegiatan seni ini membawa pengunjung atau wisatawan ke hotel atau mall atau pertunjukkan wisata milik mereka dan tentunya membawa laba bagi mereka dan para seniman tradisional mendapat pesanan/pekerjaan dari pihak swasta.


For the private sector as long as it brings material benefits, they will try to provide the best funding for efforts to preserve traditional arts and for the government itself, economic growth in the tourism and creative industries can generate foreign exchange and create jobs.

Bagi pihak swasta sepanjang membawa keuntungan materi, mereka akan memberikan pendanaan terbaiknya untuk usaha melestarikan kesenian tradisional dan bagi pemerintah sendiri, pertumbuhan ekonomi di bidang pariwisata dan industri kreatif dapat menghasilkan devisa negara dan lapangan kerja.


The role of government in entry permits for tourists.

(Peran Pemerintah dalam Perijinan Masuk Bagi Wisatawan)


As previously explained, the private sector requires many visitors or tourists to come to their places, but often they are constrained by entry permits for tourists to visit the country, so the role of the government as a regulator is needed so that there is the ease of entry permits for tourists to come.

Sebagaimana dijelaskan sebelumnya, sektor swasta memerlukan banyak pengunjung atau wisatawan datang ke tempat mereka, tapi seringkali dibatasi oleh perijinan masuk bagi wisatawan untuk mengunjungi negeri, jadi peranan pemerintah sebagai pemangku kebijakan diperlukan sehingga ada kemudahan ijin masuk bagi wisatawan datang.


On the other hand, the government also needs to be selective in choosing incoming tourists, so that those who come to visit are quality tourists, not tourists who cause problems. What is meant by quality tourists are tourists who have sufficient finances to support their lives during a visit or tour and respect the culture and beliefs of the local people. Meanwhile, tourists who caused problems are the opposite of quality tourists.

Dilain pihak, pemerintah juga perlu selektif dalam memilih wisatawan yang datang, sehingga yang datang berkunjunga adalah wisatawan yang berkualitas, bukan wisatawan yang membuat masalah. Apa yang dimaksud wisatawan yang berkualitas adalah yang memiliki cukup uang untuk mendukung kehidupan mereka selama kunjungan atau tur dan menghormati budaya dan keyakinan penduduk lokal. Sedangkan wisatawan yang membuat masalah adalah kebalikan daripada wisatawan yang berkualitas.


The Synergy between traditional arts activists, the government, and the private sector.

(Sinergi Antara Para Seniman Tradisional, Pemerintah, dan Pihak Swasta)


To be more effective, it is necessary to cooperate between traditional arts activists, the government, and the private sector to form an ecosystem that is mutually beneficial to all parties.

Untuk lebih efektif, diperlukan kerjasama antara para seniman tradisional, pemerintah, dan pihak swasta kedalam bentuk sebuah ekosistim yang saling menguntungkan semua pihak.


First, traditional art activists must have creative ideas to realize, then the private sector provides sponsorship for traditional art activities, and the government provides easy licensing for traditional art activities themselves and also easy entry permits for tourists who come to enjoy works of art.

Pertama, Para seniman tradisional harus memiliki ide kreatif untuk diwujudkan, kemudian pihak swasta memberikan sponsor untuk para seniman tradisional, dan pemerintah menyediakan kemudahan perijinan bagi para seniman tradisional itu sendiri dan juga kemudahan ijin masuk bagi wisatawan yang datang untuk menikmati hasil pekerjaan seni.


If we wants traditional arts activists to have many creative ideas, their work needs to be properly appreciated by all parties, without proper appreciation they tend to remain static.

In essence, to create ecosystem mutualism, it is necessary to create a balanced ecosystem between traditional arts activists, the private sector, and the government, where no one party dominates the other.

Jika kita ingin para seniman tradisional memiliki ide kreatif, pekerjaan mereka perlu dihargai secara layak oleh semua pihak, tanpa penghargaan yang layak mereka cenderung jalan ditempat.


However, the presence of tourists can have a positive impact on the preservation of traditional arts as long as they are managed properly.

Bagaimanapun, kehadiran wisatawan dapat memiliki dampak positif pada pelestarian kesenian tradisional sepanjang dikelola dengan baik.


The ability to make regulations that can sort out quality tourists or vice versa is a challenge for the bureaucracy in government, if successful it will make the tourism sector better than before.

Kemampuan membuat kebijakan yang dapat meyeleksi wisatawan yang berkualitas atau sebaliknya merupakan tantangan bagi birokrasi di pemerintahan, jika sukses hal itu akan membuat sektor pariwisata lebih baik dari sebelumnya.
